According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, New York Mets bench cog Dominic Smith (stress fracture, left foot) will be ramping up his rehab efforts at Port St. Lucie with hopes of returning to the team before the end of the season.
Smith, currently in Florida “should receive some live at-bats in instructional ball before his potential activation on September 25”.
The 24-year-old hit a collective .210/.259/.406 over 332 plate appearances through the 2017 and 2018 seasons before breaking out in 2019, slashing .278/.352/.506 with 10 home runs, 10 doubles, and 22 RBIs.
Originally selected for the Mets’ Opening Day roster to platoon at first with Pete Alonso (short-lived, due to Alonso’s breakout), Smith settled into a bench role before petitioning the team to allow him to spend time in the outfield, where he performed adequately (-3.0 DRS, -3.5 UZR over 223 outfield innings).
