Former Mets bench coach Dick Scott will be joining the Miami Marlins front office as their director for player development.
Scott, 55, was hired by the Mets to be their bench coach for the 2016 season. The job opened up for Scott after Bob Geren took the same job with the Los Angeles Dodgers to be closer to his family.
“It was a very tough decision, but I am headed to L.A.,” Geren said in 2015 according to ESPN. “Both my wife and I have aging parents and extended family in Southern California. It’s not often you get a chance in baseball to work that close to home and to your family. I’m going to miss everything about New York and the Mets. It was a wonderful four years.”
Scott served as the bench coach for two years before being apart of the Mets’ coaching exodus. Kevin Long, Tom Goodwin, Dan Warthen, and Scott are all no longer on the team and have since found jobs elsewhere.
In his new position, Scott will have a big focus on the minor leagues. He will take on the role as field coordinator and work directly under Gary Denbo who is the Marlins’ newly hired vice president of player development and strategy.
This will be familiar territory for Scott who has had much experience in the realm of player development. He worked in similar positions from 2001-2009 with the Toronto Blue Jays and from 2013-2015 with the Mets. He also served as the Mets’ minor-league field coordinator from 2011 to 2012.
