After being sidelined with a shoulder impingement, Mets’ pitcher Dellin Betances will undergo shoulder surgery and miss the rest of the season.

The right-handed relief pitcher was first placed on the 10-day IL on April 8, a day after making his season debut and his lone appearance of 2021. He was then placed on a 60 -day IL toward the end of April.

After working hard to strengthen his shoulder, he went on a rehab assignment first with the St. Lucie Mets and then later with Triple-A Syracuse, hoping he would return to the team at some point in July.

Unfortunately his rehab assignment never went as planned, as Betances allowed eight runs over 3 2/3 innings pitched. Prior to today’s game, manager Luis Rojas announced that Betances will undergo shoulder surgery in the near future, ending his 2021 season.

Since signing with the Mets, Betances has appeared in only 16 games due to multiple injury issues. He has struggled to find the strike zone, walking 13 hitters, hitting three batters and throwing two wild pitches in 12 2/3 innings, with a 7.82 ERA in his Mets’ career.

His contract is up after this season and it’s likely that he has thrown his last pitch with the New York Mets.
