Baseball Digest announced their end-of-season award winners and New York Mets hurler Jacob deGrom took home their Pitcher of the Year honors.
In a press release, deGrom spoke about his mindset this year and what it meant to him to take home the award.
“It’s a great honor. I had a simple philosophy this season — to take it pitch-by-pitch and inning-by-inning. It was my job to put up zeroes and that’s what I tried to do. I tried to control what I could control. What I’m most proud of this year was my consistency.”
And consistent he was. Jacob deGrom set MLB single season records for most consecutive quality starts (24) and most consecutive outings allowing less than three runs (29).
The 30-year-old Florida native led all MLB pitchers with his 1.70 earned-run average, 1.99 FIP, 2.60 xFIP, 0.41 home runs allowed per nine, 216 ERA+, and 8.8 fWAR.
His 11.16 strikeouts per nine innings ranked fifth in the majors and his 1.91 walks per nine were good for seventh.
DeGrom’s final line for the season was a 10-9 record in 32 starts (217 innings), pitching to a 1.70 ERA with 269 strikeouts, 0.912 WHIP, and a 5.85 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Baseball Digest named Boston’s Mookie Betts as the Player of the Year and the Oakland Athletics’ Blake Treinen as the Reliever of the Year.
