With the Mets looking to end their seven game losing streak, Jacob deGrom came through with a brilliant shutout performance. DeGrom allowed just four hits and no walks while striking out eight to earn his eight win of the season.

“Honestly, I approached it like every other start,” deGrom said of Thursday’s win. “I went out there and tried to put up zeros. I try not to be too confident when I’m out there. You get too cocky, you can be put back in your place real quick.” (Anthony DiComo, MLB.com)

“He’s certainly a deserving young man,” Mets manager Terry Collins said. “He’s pitched great.”

Without a doubt, deGrom deserves to make the All-Star team. He’s quickly emerged into one of the elite pitchers in the National League.

In his last seven starts, deGrom has been utterly dominant. He has a 1.20 ERA with 57 strikeouts in 52.2 innings. This stretch has lowered his ERA to 2.15 and his WHIP to 0.92.

He’s top ten in the league in ERA and Strikeouts, and is tied for second in the league in WHIP. Only former Cy Young award winner Max Scherzer has a better mark.

It’s been tough watching this team play in recent weeks, but the excellent pitching staff headlined by deGrom and Harvey provides the team with a glimmer of hope.

“There’s definitely some relief, there’s no question about that,” Cuddyer said. “I think for everyone involved, there’s definitely some relief. A big, collective deep breath. Hopefully, we can continue and play well tomorrow.”
