Anthony Dicomo of MLB.com reports that the Mets had preliminary conversations with Jacob deGrom about a contract extension this offseason.
However, the discussions never left the preliminary stage and as a result, the Mets and deGrom mutually agreed to not discuss the matter any further and agreed to a one-year, $7.4 million to avoid arbitration instead.
deGrom is coming off a very strong season that saw him pitch a career-high of 201.1 innings.
Along with that, 29-year-old went 15-10 with a 3.53 ERA, 3.50 FIP, 1.187 WHIP and a 10.7 K/9 over 31 starts this past season.
If the Mets were to not sign deGrom to a contract extension, he would become a free agent after the 2020 season and have another two years of arbitration that could see significant significant raises.
As it is, deGrom saw more than a $3 million raise from his last time in arbitration as he made $4.05 million last season.
