Jacob deGrom has been doing all he has been asked to do to try and help the Mets win ball games, but unfortunately the Mets have not given him enough run support in those starts.
Since making his debut on May 15th, when he lost to the Yankees 1-0, deGrom is 0-3, with a 3.44 ERA, 32 strikeouts in 36.2 innings. He has kept the Mets in every single game, even tossing a six inning performance on May 31st, where he struck out 11 Phillies and the Mets were able to win the game 5-4. But still, his first major league victory keeps eluding him.
“My job is to keep us in the games,” deGrom tells Ken Davidoff of the Post. “Like I’ve said before, that’s what I go out there and try to do. I feel like the wins will take care of themselves. I feel like it’ll happen very soon.”
DeGrom put together a decent game on Wednesday night, tossing five innings, and allowing three runs on nine hits, walking a batter and striking out four, and still the Mets would only muster up one run for their top pitching prospect.
“I’m sure he wants to win,” Collins said of deGrom. “He’s a big leaguer. … But he knows that it doesn’t come easy. We’ve got to get him some runs to work with. He’s had to pitch in close games almost every time he’s been out.
Collins continues, “But he’s a big boy. He knows that you’ve got to go out and continue to work. Continue to pitch well. And one of these days, we’re going to get that big hit for him, and he’s going to get that win.”
