The New York Mets’ general manager search may finally be drawing to a close.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, terms have been agreed upon between the Mets and Brodie Van Wagenen for the latter to run New York’s baseball operations.

Sherman adds that “if contract language can be finalized, a deal could be completed as early as today.”

Earlier this week, the GM search was trimmed down to three candidates: Former Brewers’ GM Doug Melvin, Chaim Bloom of the Rays organization and Van Wagenen.

On Thursday, Melvin’s name was removed from the running, and as of Friday, it appeared as though Van Wagenen had the upper hand over Bloom. That is all but confirmed at this point as well.

Van Wagenen was the Co-Head of CAA Sports’ Baseball division prior to his hire. CAA represents Mets’ players Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, Todd Frazier and Yoenis Cespedes among others.

Since Van Wagenen was an agent and is now likely to join a baseball front office, other agents have voiced their concerns that this could be a conflict of interest.

Tony Clark, the executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association has heard from many agents over the past several days.

“I won’t tell you how many calls or how many texts I have gotten,” Clark said Friday at Dodger Stadium prior to Game 3 of the World Series “I will simply suggest to you that our membership is paying attention.

“They understand the opportunities that exist for representatives to make the decisions that they are going to make. … To the extent that possibility exists, I would be confident in suggesting that the understanding and appreciation for confidential information remains so.”

Super agent Scott Boras told the LA Times earlier this week: “If someone came to my son and made a commitment to him, and said I want to care about your interests, and then he took all that information that my son had given him over time, and then he went to work for a team and used that to negotiate against me, I would be very upset.”

According to Sherman, money was a big part of negotiation between the Mets and Van Wagenen because he has been a successful agent and likely costed more than Bloom.

We will keep you up to date as this becomes official.
