According to Ken Davidoff of the New York Post, multiple industry sources have told him the New York Mets’ agreement with the tenth overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft, Kumar Rocker, is currently in jeopardy.
Davidoff notes that the team expressed concerns with the right-hander’s pitching elbow during his physical in New York last week, though Rocker’s team disagrees with those concerns.
Jack Ramsey first reported an issue with Rocker’s medicals this past Friday, though he still expected Rocker to sign at the time. The two sides initially agreed to sign a $6 million signing bonus.
As Davidoff mentions, they could either renegotiate the deal, go their separate ways and the Mets would forfeit the pick, or the Mets can take the risk and just sign off on the originally agreed to terms.
There is still time for the two sides to come to an agreement before Sunday’s 5 PM signing deadline.
When asked about Rocker’s status and any potential issues during his press conference at Citi Field on Monday afternoon, Mets acting General Manager Zack Scott declined to comment.
“I’m not going to comment on any drafted players. There’s an August 1st signing deadline, our plan is to address all 20 players situations at that time. We’re not going to comment on any one individual at this time,” Scott said.
