Before tonight’s game against the Yankees, manager Terry Collins told reporters that David Wright will begin baseball activities on Monday.

Though Wright is eligible to return from the disabled list on Thursday, Collins said that wasn’t realistic and he hopes the Mets third baseman can return by Saturday. (Anthony DiComo)

Wright swung the bat on Friday but the real test comes when he begins fielding ground balls, jogging and running the bases early this week.

The Mets captain strained his hamstring on April 14 and was placed on th 15 day DL the next day, although general manager Sandy Alderson cautioned it was more likely Wright would miss three weeks.

Wright was batting .333/.371/.424 in 35 plate appearances before the injury. He was replaced by Eric Campbell, who has performed well in his absence.

Even though the Mets have been winning without Wright, having him back would definitely be a huge boost for the team and the bench becomes stronger with Campbell as well.
