New York Mets third-baseman, David Wright, has been able to feel like his vintage self over the last few games. Between the walk-off single in Saturday’s thrilling extra-inning win over Milwaukee to his three-run bomb against Washington last night, Wright has shown flashes of his former greatness.

For a few days he has gotten to play for that feeling of pure enjoyment, and not have to think so much of how much his back has been plaguing him. This season has been anything but fun for the 33 year-old Wright, as everyday is a struggle, just to get himself ready to play in a game. Last night though he received some reward, crushing a ball off Gio Gonzalez. It was vintage Wright. His arms extended, a quick glance to watch it leave the park and a satisfying trot around the bases.

“When you’re a good player in other sports, you’re rewarded in different ways,” Wright said. “In basketball, you’ll get your points. In football, you’ll get your numbers. In baseball, there’s a lot of variables involved. And some luck.” (NY Post)

Wright has had a tough season thus far. Overall on the year he has hit to a .225/.355/.403 slash line. His productivity has mostly been saved by his ability to get on base by walking, setting the table for Yoenis Cespedes and Michael Conforto. Last night’s homer was his fifth of the season and he has accumulated 12 RBI.

Getting Wright to heat up would be huge for a lineup that prior to yesterday was near dormant. Wright, who used to be the center piece of the offense, is now getting used to being a role player. He though has shown his ability to still knock the ball around when the opportunity presents itself.
