It seems that after losing David Wright to injuries that ultimately ended his career, the Mets’ search for a new captain may not require much more looking.

Pete Alonso, the Mets rookie sensation who hit for an MLB rookie-record 53 home runs last season, has emerged as a strong leadership presence in the clubhouse just one year after making his MLB debut.

It seems his campaign for the next captain of the team is also backed by Wright. In a phone interview with the New York Post, Wright expressed his support for Pete and his leadership potential but ensured his audience that the journey to captain takes longer than one season.

“It seems like they all, I don’t want to say look up, but it seems like they have a great deal of respect for Pete and that obviously is a great start,” Wright said of the Mets’ clubhouse.

Wright also cautioned that putting labels on younger players could be unfair to more seasoned players in the clubhouse. In Alonso’s case, those veterans are Michael Conforto, Robinson Cano, and Jacob deGrom.

The latest team captain also provided some words of advice for Alonso as to how he should approach the road ahead.

“My advice is just be yourself,” he said. “Be genuine, be natural and lead by example.”
