David Stearns

The Milwaukee Brewers announced on Thursday that David Stearns is stepping down as Brewers president of baseball operations and will remain in an advisory role to ownership and baseball operations. Matt Arnold will move into the lead role overseeing baseball operations.

Brewers’ owner Mark Attanasio in a statement: “Our discussions about his long-term plans have always been open and candid, and while I am disappointed that David is stepping down, I am grateful to David and know he has a very bright future.”

“This is not an easy decision for me and is something I have been wrestling with for a long time,” said Stearns. “Mark Attanasio and I have had an open dialogue and we both knew this day could eventually come. It has been a priority for both of us that any transition would take place while the organization is in a healthy position with solid leadership and a talented roster going forward. That is certainly the case today.”

The New York Mets have been interested in adding Stearns to their front office essentially since the day Steve Cohen bought the team and they’ve tried to do so each of the last two offseasons.

The Mets do not currently have a team president after Sandy Alderson announced he was stepping down last month. Mets GM Billy Eppler is the top baseball executive right now as the team heads into a very important offseason that includes key free agents like Jacob deGrom, Edwin Diaz, and Brandon Nimmo.
