On Sunday, Mets’ manager Buck Showalter said in his pregame press conference that, “although it has not been committed to,” left-handed pitcher David Peterson is expected to start New York’s game on Tuesday. The Mets are scheduled to take on the Milwaukee Brewers at 7:10 pm ET in game two of the teams’ four-game series at Citi Field.

Peterson has struggled so far in 2023. He is 1-6 with an 8.08 ERA over the course of eight starts and 39 innings. He has struck out 45 and walked 14 over the 39 frames. As a result of Peterson’s struggles, he was sent down to Triple-A Syracuse on May 16. His lack of control constantly put him behind in counts, resulting in the inflated ERA and the league’s 16th percentile xBA.

Since being sent down, Peterson has started six games for Syracuse. He has allowed 16 [earned] runs and 30 hits while walking 18 across 32 innings. This has resulted in a lackluster 4.50 ERA. Despite the continued walk issues, Peterson’s strikeouts have stayed up, as he has 39 punch outs across those 32 Triple-A innings.

Joey Lucchesi was a name that probably was considered, as unlike Peterson, he has thrived in Triple-A this season (2.36 ERA over 53 1.3 innings pitched). However, Lucchesi would have had to pitch on just four days rest on Tuesday. Thus, likely why Peterson was selected.
