Mets catcher Travis d’Arnaud will serve as the designated hitter tonight for Triple-A Las Vegas as he moves closer to rejoining the big-league team. D’Arnaud is slated to catch on Saturday and Sunday.

D’Arnaud batted .310 with a .474 OBP during 38 plate appearances while rehabbing in Adv-A St. Lucie where he collected two doubles, nine walks and five RBI.

According to GM Sandy Alderson, the plan is to activate d’Arnaud from the disabled list this coming Tuesday when the Mets begin a two-game series against the Kansas City Royals at Citi Field.

Travis d’Arnaud is getting close to completing his rehab assignment. The Mets targeting next Tuesday for him to return from the DL. He is expected to shift his rehab to Triple-A Las Vegas for the weekend in preparation for his return.

D’Arnaud went 1-for-4 with three walks in a doubleheader for Class-A St. Lucie on Monday. He caught seven innings in the opener and was the designated hitter in the second game.

The Mets’ primary catcher when healthy, d’Arnaud threw out one of two would-be base stealers in the first game, but a scout labeled the throws “below average” according to Adam Rubin.

Before he went on the disabled list, d’Arnaud was hitting .196 with no home runs and one RBI in 13 games. 

Rene Rivera is expected to be the backup for d’Arnaud when he returns, while Kevin Plawecki gets demoted to Triple-A.
