travis d'Arnaud

Travis d’Arnaud received a platelet-rich-plasma injection and will be briefly shut down even from hitting in order to to rest.

He was examined by team doctor David Altchek and there’s no change in his original diagnosis of a right rotator cuff strain.  Altchek does not feel surgery will be needed.

“It’s just going to take more time. Clearly he’s not ready yet,” assistant GM John Ricco said.

Previous Report – May 7

Manager Terry Collins spoke with reporters this evening at Petco Park and said that catcher Travis d’Arnaud attempted to throw on Saturday, but felt discomfort and was shut down.

It was d’Arnaud’s first time trying to throw since landing on the disabled list with a strained right rotator cuff on April 25.

Collins didn’t mince any words and called today’s developments as “pretty discouraging” for the 27-year old d’Arnaud. “Maybe we didn’t wait long enough before letting him throw,”

He will remain at the team’s complex at Port St. Lucie.

Before getting injured, the Mets starting backstop was off to a slow start, batting just .196 with no homers and one RBI.

Anthony DiComo of MLB.com speculates that d’Arnaud will miss most of the month of May.

Original Report – May 4

New York Mets catcher, Travis d’Arnaud has yet to resume baseball activities. After landing on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained right rotator cuff, there is no current timetable for his return. Manager, Terry Collins, is unaware of when Travis may be able to resume playing.

“I can’t predict that,” Collins said. “A lot of times you come in the morning, and if he’s feeling good a couple days in a row, they might start getting him on a throwing program. But right now, he’s still just getting treatment.” (Mets.com)

Travis is currently eligible to come off the DL on May 11th, but he is unlikely to hit that return date. Kevin Plawecki and Rene Rivera have filled in due to d’Arnaud’s absence. Before getting injured, the Mets starting backstop was off to a slow start, batting just .196 with no homers and one RBI.

This stint on the DL marks his third since the start of last season. Getting d’Arnaud going is another key to the success of this offense.
