Prior to the 2015 season, many believed the Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets made likely trade partners because the Cubs had young hitting with a need for pitching, and the Mets had young pitching with a need for hitters.

A deal between the two teams never materialized. However, that didn’t prevent either team from succeeding as the Mets won the 2015 pennant, and the Cubs won the 2016 World Series.

Despite both team’s recent success, it appears the Cubs are once again interested in striking a deal with the New York Mets.  According to Matt Ehalt of The Record, the Cubs have approached the Mets about obtaining one of the Mets starting pitchers.  At this time, the starting pitchers coveted were not named, nor were the parameters of a deal presented.

Both Theo Epstein and Sandy Alderson have a track record of being aggressive at the Winter Meetings. While these teams have failed to strike a deal in the past, this is a situation that merits monitoring over the week.
