Michael Conforto spoke to the media on Wednesday at the Mets 12th annual coat drive at Citi Field.

The 24-year-old stayed positive on his rehab process although he has not been cleared to swing a bat as of yet.

“I see the doctor next week and he’ll modify (the plan) based on my strength, based on my range of motion,” said Conforto. “I think from how I’m feeling I think it’s going to be good stuff but you never know.”

Sandy Alderson indicated on Sunday that he may miss Opening Day. Conforto accepted the fact that may happen.

“Would it be the worst thing in the world to miss the first few games or first week or so? Yeah, I don’t think it would be the worst thing in the world but I definitely want to be out there,” said Conforto. “We’ll see what happens.”

Conforto believes all his offseason shoulder workouts will make him stronger when all is said and done.

“It almost feels like I’ve been repaired to the point where it’s been an improvement. I’ve done more shoulder exercises than I had ever want[ed] to do.”

“My shoulders are definitely the strongest they’ve ever been on both sides. Anything I do on my left side, I do on my right side. I think that’s the positive I can take from it.”

“I don’t expect any apprehension. I think the doctor said that would be normal, but I’m pretty confident I’m gonna just jump right back into it. I’ll take my time, but I think I’ll be just fine.”

Conforto was in the midst of the best season of his young career in 2017, batting  .279/.384/.555  with 72 runs scored, 20 doubles, 27 home runs, and 68 RBI.

Showcasing his versatility, Conforto wasn’t a liability in the field either as he was good for a 2.9 UZR/150 and -2 defensive runs saved in 818 2/3 innings split between all three outfield positions. Those numbers would have been better if he didn’t play 43 games out of position in center field.

Overall on the season he was a 3.6 bWAR and 4.4 fWAR player with a very robust 145 OPS+.

When asked about any goals he may have for the season beyond staying healthy, Conforto stayed focus on the here and now.

“I’m just trying to get back out on the field. Trying to wrap my head around the plan of getting myself back in shape. It’s been a little frustrating just because I can’t do things that I want to, but that’s just part of it.”

“It’s just being patient and making sure I get my body right first and then we’ll take care of the rest of that stuff when the time comes.”
