Jim Bowden, a national baseball writer for The Athletic, has heard rumblings about a possible deal between the Mets and Rockies that would send shortstop Trevor Story and right-handed pitcher Jon Gray to Queens.

“Get your popcorn ready in New York as the Mets and Yankees are expected to rock the deadline. You might need extra butter and salt for the Mets, as I’m hearing a trade sending Story and Jon Gray from Colorado to New York might happen.”

A Story and Gray trade would solidify the Mets shortstop position until Francisco Lindor returns and give the Mets a reliable rotation piece. Both players are free agents after this season.

Story is having a down year offensively with a slash line of .240/.312/.412 with an 89 OPS+. The Yankees made an offer for the 28-year-old but no traction was made as of Monday per Jon Heyman.

Gray missed time earlier this season with a right flexor strain and maintains a 3.67 ERA, 1.22 WHIP with 91 strikeouts across 98 innings pitched. A true conundrum, Gray pitches better at Coors Field with his ERA over a full run lower at his home ballpark.
