The team breathed a sigh of relief on Wednesday night, when x-rays on Yoenis Cespedes came back negative and revealed no broken bones.
He was diagnosed with contusions on his ring and middle fingers on his left hand.
“I felt the pain when I first got hit,” Cespedes said after the game. “I didn’t think it was broken, but I was relieved when the X-Rays came back negative.”
Terry Collins is giving Cespedes and many of his regulars the day off during Thursday’s series finale against the Phillies are Citizens Bank Park.
“He’ll be OK,” said a relieved Collins about Cespedes. “We’ve got a long way to go before we have to use him. Certainly, I’d like to use him this weekend. I think I probably will. But I’m just relieved that nothing’s broken.”
The Mets manager admitted he was at a loss as to who would hit where in the lineup if he had lost his big-time slugger, and is glad it’s something he doesn’t have to worry about.

Outfielder Yoenis Cespedes was removed from Wednesday night’s game against Philadelphia at Citizens Bank Park, after he was hit in the left hand with a pitch in the third inning by Phillies pitcher Justin De Fratus.
After getting hit, Cespedes dropped his bat and immediately collapsed in pain grabbing his hand and wrist before Mets trainers escorted him back to the dugout.
Initially, the ruling on the field was a foul ball off the knob of Cespedes’ bat, but umpires overturned the call and ruled it a hit by pitch. Kirk Nieuwenhuis entered the game to pinch run for Cespedes and then remained in to play center field.
Cespedes is batting .287 with 17 home runs in 53 games for the Mets. He is undergoing X-rays as we speak and we’ll pass along any new information as it becomes available.
