One thing we’re starting to see with Terry Collins since he’s joined the Mets is that he is very consistent. I like that, it’s an admirable quality.
Yesterday, Collins followed through with his gameplan for pitcher Oliver Perez and told him exactly how things were going to work
“I said: ‘Here’s my feelings: Maybe you need a fresh start. Maybe you need a different role,’ ” Collins said of the meeting. “He said, ‘Well, if that’s what you want me to do.’ I said: ‘No, you have to want to do it. You have to buy into it. If you don’t, it’s not going to work. And so if you feel you want a shot, that you can make this club as a starter, then by God, you’re going to be given that opportunity. And then as we get into spring training, we’ll see what the results will be.”
As Collins has said all offseason long, he will keep an open mind about Perez and would not allow the fans animosity toward Perez to determine his destiny with the team. So for now, Ollie will be battling for a spot in the rotation along with Chris Young, Chris Capuano, Dillon Gee, D.J. Carrasco, Boof Bonser, and Jenrry Mejia and the outcome.
“I mean, I have all the numbers. I’ve heard all the stories. Now I’m going to make my own evaluation,” Collins said. “No disrespect to anyone else and what I’ve heard about him. But, you know what? People do change sometimes.”
This will be one of the most closely followed storylines for the Mets this spring.
