Cohoon Flirts With No-Hitter In B-Mets 5-0 Victory!

Through six innings on Friday night at MetroBank Park in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania it appeared as though the Mets organization may have their second no hitter of 2012.  Binghamton Mets starter Mark Cohoon held the Harrisburg Senators hitless through the first six innings of the game, but with one out in the seventh inning Justin Bloxom blooped a fly ball into shallow left center field that fell between shortstop Wilfredo Tovar and center fielder Raul Reyes.  Bloxom ended up at second on the play, and Cohoon’s no hit bid was done.

Cohoon got the following Harrisburg batter to pop out, and struck out the next batter to get out of the inning, the Senators stranding Bloxom on second.  After a perfect three up and three down in the eighth inning, Cohoon got into a little trouble in the bottom of the ninth.  After the Senators leadoff batter grounded out, Brian Goodwin singled to center field giving Harrisburg their second hit of the game.  Cohoon hit the following batter, a decision manager Pedro Lopez argued with the umpiring crew about to no avail.  With runners on first and second, Cohoon struck out Bloxom and got Jimmy Van Ostrand to fly out to center field to end the game and give the visiting B-Mets the five to nothing victory.

Cohoon’s line on the night read nine innings pitched, his first complete game of the season, no runs on two hits, a season high ten strikeouts and only one walk issued.  He threw a total of 113 pitches in the game, 81 of them for strikes.  With the win in the game, Cohoon’s record now stands at 7-and-8 after his 19th start of 2012.

This was the second time this season that Cohoon took a no hit bid into the seventh inning only to see it falter in that frame.  Cohoon does have a no hitter to his credit, that coming in his final season at North Central Texas when he no no’d Brookhaven Junior College.

At the plate, the B-Mets scored two runs in the fifth inning, two in the eighth, and added a single run in the ninth to win their 58^th game of the season.  Dustin Martin was 2-for-5 on the night, with his fourth triple of the season, two RBI’s and a run scored.

Raul Reyes and Jefry Marte’s lines on the night read identical, each going 1-for-4 with a double and run scored.  The only addition would be Reyes’ eighteenth RBI of the season in a B-Mets uniform.

Cohoon helped himself out at the plate as well in the game, going 1-for-1 with three sacrifice bunts and an RBI.  Cohoon’s single in the top of the ninth inning scored Juan Centeno from second base giving the B-Mets their fifth run of the night.

B-Mets Buzz: The last Binghamton Mets pitcher to throw a no hitter was Miguel Pinango in 2006.  Pinango’s no hitter came on the road in Portland, Maine in game two of a doubleheader against the SeaDogs.  The B-Mets and Senators are back at it again on Saturday night with Armando Rodriguez (2-2, 3.14) getting the start for Binghamton against Harrisburg’s Danny Rosenbaum (7-9, 3.79).  In roster news on Friday, Adrian Rosario has been sent back to the St. Lucie Mets, and the B-Mets have added right handed relief pitcher Andrew Carpenter.  Carpenter was signed to a minor league free agent contract by the big club on Friday.  Previously in 2012, he was granted free agency after refusing a transfer from the Toronto Blue Jays to their Triple A club in Las Vegas.  Carpenter started the 2012 season in Las Vegas and was called up to Toronto on July 3rd.
