Chris Bassitt was lights out on Sunday afternoon as the Mets shut out the Phillies for the second day in a row at home at Citi Field. Mets pitching has been locked in and Bassitt has been a part of that. With five scoreless innings, he improves to 24-innings pitched since last allowing a run.

Bassitt allowed just four hits and two walks through his five innings pitched. He struck out five over the course of 97 pitches thrown (63 for strikes) and has a 3.27 ERA after Sunday’s start.

Buck Showalter credited his Mets pitching staff with holding the Phillies to two runs in three games. “To me, that’s the story of the series,” said Showalter. “The way our guys pitch, they were just solid.”

Showalter did say Bassitt’s command was a little off on Sunday and shaky at times, which is why he was removed after five innings. Showalter stated that as the season comes down the stretch, these guys (the pitchers) are going to be throwing a lot more, so he is also trying to save them for when it and not exhaust their arms now. Showalter said he was glad Bassitt was able to get out of the fifth inning jam, but that the inning coming close to getting away from him was why he didn’t go back out for the sixth as Showalter turned the mound over to the bullpen who kept the shutout intact.

Bassitt also spoke and reflected on his outing and on the recent successes and strong outings from the entire pitching staff.

“I think there’s no secret to how good our pitching staff is,” said Bassitt. “Especially when you have Jake and Max, it’s hard to score on us. That’s kind of how we’re built.” He also said it’s good for him to watch deGrom and Scherzer. “I’m watching greatness.” He said while they are four-seam, glove-side” pitchers, Bassitt himself is a two-seam, “arm-side” pitcher, but that he’s still able to learn from the two stars.

Bassitt now also has the fourth most consecutive games without allowing an earned run by a starting pitcher with three straight. He sits behind deGrom who had two four-scoreless-game streaks in 2019-2020 and a five game streak in 2021.
