I’m going to be taking a look at the last few years of draft classes (2009-2011) for the Mets as we take a look at who’s doing what in the early goings of the new season. I’m keeping it simple and looking only at the top five rounds with an honorable mention here or there. Lets check in on the 2001 Draft Class:

OF Brandon Nimmo
School: Wyoming HS
Selected: 1st Round, 13th overall
Level:
Stats:

MMO Thoughts: Nimmo is still in extended spring training and will probably remain there until Short Season starts this summer. He impressed many of the Mets coaches and scouts during Spring Training and everybody in the organization is waiting to see what he can do in Brooklyn.

RHP Michael Fulmer
School: Oklahoma HS
Selected: Comp round, 44th overall
Level: Class A Savannah
Stats: 2 GS, 9 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 8 K, 4.00 ERA, 1.22 WHIP

MMO Thoughts: They’re taking it slow with Fulmer and he has yet to complete five innings in a start. He’s hitting 95 mph consistently, which is nice, but he continues to work on his secondary stuff. He’s oozing with potential.

RHP Cory Mazzoni
School: North Carolina State
Selected: 2nd round, 71st overall
Level: Class A St. Lucie
Stats: 3 GS, 16.0 IP, 13 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 11 K, 1.13 ERA, 1.06 WHIP

MMO Thoughts: Mazzoni is having no problem at all getting batters out in the FSL. So far, so good for this second rounder who could move through the system quickly. He has a good idea of what he’s doing whenever he takes the hill.

RHP Logan Verrett
School: Baylor
Selected: 3rd round, 101st overall
Level: Class A Savannah
Stats: 3 GS, 13.0 IP, 13 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 14 K, 2.77 ERA, 1.31 WHIP

MMO Thoughts: He packages a low nineties fastball with a very good changeup and tosses in a decent slider for good measure. He allows too many baserunners, but so far has managed to get out of jams.

RHP Tyler Pill
School: Cal State Fullerton
Selected: 4th round, 132nd overall
Level: Class A Savannah
Stats: 2 GS, 12.0 IP, 8 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 9 K, 0.00 ERA, 0.75 WHIP

MMO Thoughts: What can you say about Pill’s incredible start so far? His changeup has shown signs of improvement and while none of his pitches are of the plus variety yet, this kid has great command and knows how to pitch. He’s very composed for his age.

LHP Jack Leathersich
School: UMass-Lowell
Selected: 5th round, 162nd overall
Level: Class A Savannah
Stats: 4 G, 9.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 15 K, 0.00 ERA, 0.56 WHIP

MMO Thoughts: For those of you who thought Leathersich’ 126/27 K/BB in 89 IP at UMass was a fluke, it wasn’t. He’s actually exceeding those peripherals at Savannah. Domination is his game, Awesomeness is his name. He should be in St. Lucie by the 4th of July.

Overall, this is quite an impressive showing. Our other draft classes are doing well too, we’ll take a look at 2010 next.
