According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, longtime Philadephia Phillies and current Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman Chase Utley plans to retire at the end of the season.
Utley, 39, has collected 1,880 hits over his seventeen-year career with 259 home runs, 1,025 runs batted in, and a .276/.358/.466 slash line.
Infamous for his years of Mets-killing with Philadelphia and for breaking Ruben Tejada‘s fibula while attempting to break up a double play in the seventh inning of Game 2 of the 2015 NLDS with Los Angeles, Utley will reportedly step away from the game with another year on his current contract with the Dodgers.
After signing a one-year, $2 million deal before the 2017 season, Utley re-signed with the Dodgers this past offseason for $1 million per year in 2018 and 2019.
This season, the 39-year-old veteran is hitting .231/.313/.331 with a home run and fourteen runs batted in in 130 at-bats (57 games).
