Yoenis Cespedes will play five innings tomorrow in a simulated game tomorrow to try and ramp up to get back next weekend against the New York Yankees.

It was previously reported that he was going to play for the St. Lucie Mets tomorrow, but that is apparently not the case.

In his press conference today, Mets manager Mickey Callaway said that former All-Star Yoenis Cespedes may return as soon as the team’s first series after the All-Star break across town against the Yankees.

Callaway said that Cespedes is progressing towards “something more strenuous,” either a simulated game or a rehab assignment, after passing through his running program with no pain.

Cespedes has been out of action since May 16 with a strain of the right hip flexor. Due to his history of leg related injuries, the idea of Cespedes playing first base has been bandied about, and reportedly Yoenis is willing to try the new position.

When asked about that today, Callaway responded by saying “he’s our left fielder,” seemingly squashing any idea of Cespedes trying first base in the coming weeks and months.

Cespedes was slashing .255/.316/.474 with eight homers before he got hurt. Cespedes is signed through the end of the 2020 season after resigning in the 2016 season.
