According to Mets assistant general manager John Ricco, Yoenis Cespedes is close to returning despite missing his target return date, the Rangers series.

“He had another productive day down in Florida,” Ricco said per Mike Puma of the New York Post. “We are getting close and whether or not [rehab] games is the next step, we’ll find out in the next couple of days.”

The Mets are traveling to Atlanta for a four-game set before returning to New York for series against the Cubs and the Nationals, two teams it would be great to have Cespedes for.

The Mets will be without its big bopper for awhile longer, as the slugger will not return to the team during the short two-game series against the Texas Rangers that starts Tuesday.

According to Mike Puma of the New York Post on Twitter, the Mets had initially hoped Yoenis Cespedes could rejoin the Mets and be used in a designated hitter capacity against the Rangers, but now, that won’t come to fruition.

Adam Rubin reported that Cespedes has been jogging, but has yet to ramp things up after having a setback before a rehab appearance with Single-A St. Lucie on May 26.

Cespedes has been sidelined since April 28 when he was placed on the disabled list with a hamstring strain. He re-aggravated the strain in his one rehab game, and hasn’t appeared in one since.

At the time of his injury, Cespedes was hitting at a .270/.373/.619 clip, with six homers and 10 RBI.

As of now, there is no set date that Cespedes is set to return.
