The New York Mets announced that outfielder Yoenis Cespedes, who has been on the disabled list since May 13th with a strained hip flexor, will begin a rehab assignment with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies tonight against the Trenton Thunder.

Cespedes, 32, had been wanting to avoid a rehab assignment, but after he faced Noah Syndergaard at Citi Field on Tuesday, it seems the Mets have deemed it necessary. He will look to do damage against the Yankees’ Double-A team while his compatriots look to beat the Major League Yankees in Queens.

Though he had not been hitting as well as usual, his bat has been sorely missed of late. In 37 games before his injury, Cespedes was hitting .255/.316/.474 with eight home runs and 28 RBIs.
