New York Mets outfielder and arguably their most potent offensive threat, Yoenis Cespedes, is expected to have season-ending surgery to rectify calcification in both of his heels.

This afternoon, ahead of a scheduled announcement from assistant general manager John Ricco, Mike Puma of the New York Post tweeted that the team was indeed preparing to place Cespedes on the disabled list and that the 32-year-old was “leaning toward season-ending surgery”.

Cespedes, 32, has missed 55 games this season with a myriad of lower-body issues, all of which, confirmed by both player and organization, stem from Cespedes’ heels.

Over the weekend, Ricco noted that the Cuban native has been dealing with heel issues since a teenager and the team was fully aware of his condition when they signed him to a four-year, $110 million deal prior to the 2017 season.

Stephania Bell of ESPN suggested that Cespedes condition could be “insertional calcific tendinopathy of the Achilles tendon and a potential Haglund’s deformity”, based on the recovery time and symptoms that he provided to the media.

Since coming to the Mets in a trade deadline deal in 2o16, Cespedes has hit .282/.346/.543 with 74 home runs, 201 runs batted in, 62 doubles, and a 138 OPS+.

He is signed through the next two-plus seasons with $29 million due t0 him in 2019 and $29.5 million in 2020.

Updated, 6:30 PM: After waiting for a pregame press conference with John Ricco that never materialized, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports that while awaiting a second opinion, Yoenis Cespedes has been placed on the disabled list and Jeff McNeil has been recalled.

As per Puma, there could be no formal announcement made until after tonight’s game versus the San Diego Padres.
