After leaving Sunday’s 3-2 loss to the Colorado Rockies in the first inning with quad soreness, Yoenis Cespedes will be in the lineup tonight as the New York Mets take on the Cincinnati Reds in the first of a three-game set.
Cespedes, 32, avoided a scare last weekend after coming out of last Sunday’s win over the San Diego Padres with a jammed thumb that ended up being nothing of much concern, as he returned to the lineup on Tuesday.
Cespedes has battled hip and quad injuries in the past, so taking him out of this past Sunday’s game was made strictly in a preventative manner.
The hulking left fielder is currently hitting .246/.306/.451 in 122 at-bats this season with seven home runs and 26 runs batted in.
His .321/.394/.571 slash line with runners in scoring position has evened out his lack of production otherwise, but the team is understandably taking caution with their star slugger.
Mets manager spoke to Matt Ehalt of The Record about taking Cespedes out of the game on Sunday, and also what types of signs the team was looking for in warmups today before giving him the green light to start tonight.
