The aforementioned A.J. Ewing got on base three times and continued his hot start in Triple-A in a rain-shortened affair for the Mets on Friday, where they were able to pick up a win. A.J. Bryce Conley came in to pitch the remaining four innings and allowed two runs while striking out four. Nick Morabito added two hits, including a double, and swiped his eighth base on the year.

A solo home run was the only blemish on Cam Tilly’s performance on Friday, where he dazzled over six innings. This was the longest start of the year for the 2025 draftee, and he struck out six while allowing just four hits and a walk. Although Elian Peña made his third error in the field out there, he made up for it by getting on base twice and stealing a base yet again. Randy Guzman left the yard for second straight day, which was his sixth on the year. Simon Juan added a solo shot in the eighth inning, and AJ Salgado followed suit with Randy Guzman for his sixth on the year as well. Salgado finished a single short of the cycle, raising his OPS to .911 on the year. Peña leads the St. Lucie Mets in OPS so far, sitting at .936.

He had an up-and-down first full season in pro ball in 2024, and then exploded in 2025. After starting the year in Low-A St. Lucie, Ewing quickly earned a promotion to High-A Brooklyn and then another one to Double-A Binghamton a few months later.

Back in Double-A to begin 2026, he quickly showed 2025 was no fluke.

AJ Ewing
Photo by Ed Delany of Metsmerized

At the plate, Ewing is doing everything right. He’s maintained every aspect of his game from last season, and even improved on them. He’s hitting .387 between Binghamton and Syracuse, up from .315 last year. He’s also walking significantly more, boosting his OBP from .401 in 2025 to .500 in 2026, while keeping his strikeout rate right in line with his previous season mark. He’s still running wild as well with 13 stolen bases in 14 tries.

He’s playing a good center field, and while that’s been by far his primary position for at least the last two seasons, he’s still getting just enough playing time at second base to keep it as an option for him if that’s where the Mets end up needing him.

But here’s the most exciting part: He’s started hitting for more power. He’s not, and will never, slug like Ryan Clifford. He has started to slug a noticeable amount more, though.

He’s always been able to drive the ball with authority into the gaps for extra-base hits. In 2025, he hit 26 doubles and 10 triples. Some of that has to do with his speed, which is a true plus, but he’s also posted legitimately encouraging exit velocity numbers for someone his size. It’s because of this that there’s always been a thought that he has the potential to hit more home runs as he matures. He was just 20-years-old for most of last season. In theory, there’s plenty of room to grow into more power.

Last year, Ewing hit three home runs in 124 games. This year, Ewing has two home runs in 21 games.

It’s not just homers either. In 16.935% of last year’s games, he has 28.205% of last year’s extra-base hits. For someone who’s still just 21, that’s a seriously notable uptick in power.

Ewing is at Triple-A, so while there’s just a small sample size of publicly available batted-ball data thus far, his .442 expected batting average, .758 expected slugging percentage, .525 xwOBA and 16.7 percent barrel rate are all incredibly encouraging marks over 13 plate appearances.

If he keeps hitting in Syracuse and the Mets keep struggling, there should be nothing keeping him from the big leagues. What else could they have to lose?

Ewing, who was promoted from Double-A Binghamton this week and went 3-for-4 in his debut for Syracuse on April 28, picked up where he left off on the plate in the first game of a doubleheader on Thursday while also making a pair of highlight diving catches in back-to-back at-bats during the top of the fifth inning.

Brandon Waddell made his fourth appearance since returning from his shoulder injury and he still does not look one-hundred percent yet. He struggled to find the zone with his fastballs; his velocity is still down, and he did not generate many swings and misses. The one positive is that his movement profile has improved significantly from 2025, so if the command returns, he could take a step forward from last year. Joey Gerber made his first Syracuse rehab appearance and his secondary pitches continued to look strong. Anderson Severino showed off his strong slider and four-seam fastball combo and made a case to join the major league ball club.

The Brooklyn lineup continues to struggle, amassing only four hits and two walks. They left seven on base and most of the lineup has an OPS in the 600s or worse. Brooklyn is a difficult stadium to hit in, especially this time of year, but this seems to go beyond that.

Noah Hall was cruising through the first four innings before running into trouble in the fifth, being pulled before he could finish the inning. Nate Lavender has not logged eight innings since his surgery, but has had mixed results. He is generating a whiff rate over 30% and filling the zone, but he is also giving up too much hard contact.

Following Ewing’s impressive week, he was promoted to Triple-A Syracuse on Monday morning.

Elian Peña has continued a great start to the season, too, as one of the youngest players in the minors. He collected another six hits this week and two steals this week, bringing his season totals to a .916 OPS and nine steals in 19 games.

Triple-A Syracuse

The Syracuse Mets lost their series last week to the Worcester Red Sox, dropping four of the six games. Syracuse won game one of the series 12-3 but were unable to do much else in the other five games. The Mets are now 13-13 and in fourth place in the International League East division.

Ronny Mauricio had limited action this series, playing in two games, but he made his presence known. Mauricio went 3-for-8 with all three of his hits leaving the yard. Mauricio drove in five runs and scored four runs while walking twice. Now with the major league team in Francisco Lindor‘s absence, Mauricio’s Triple-A OPS for now stands at .987.

Ryan Clifford continued his power streak by hitting two more home runs and also driving in eight runs, a team high for the series. Clifford, however, went just 5-for-23 in the series with 11 strikeouts. He owns a .769 OPS.

Nick Morabito, Ji Hwan Bae, and Cristian Pache all performed well in the series, each recording an OPS over .900.

Morabito went 6-for-21 with two doubles, a home run, seven walks and two stolen bases

Bae went 8-for-19 with a double, four walks and two stolen bases

Pache went 10-for-25 with three doubles, a walk, and a stolen base

Jonah Tong made two solid starts, totaling four runs allowed over 10 innings. Tong struck out 15 batters as he lowered his ERA through six starts to 5.68.

Bryce Conley also had a decent start, though he dealt with a lot of traffic. He allowed four hits and six walks in just four innings of work, but he limited the damage to just a run while striking out two. He has a 4.22 ERA in three starts.

Dakota Hawkins looked sharp in a three-inning stint out of the bullpen, allowing just a walk and no hits with four strikeouts. This was Hawkins’ first Triple-A appearance this year after having already appeared in High-A and Double-A.

Double-A Binghamton

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies also dropped their series this past week to the Erie SeaWolves, losing four of six games. After losing the first three games of the series, Binghamton was able to rebound and win two of the final three games. The Rumble Ponies are now 8-12 and tied for fourth place in the Eastern League Northeast division.

Marco Vargas, whose stock has fallen tremendously over the past few years, broke out with a good week. Vargas went 7-for-17 with two doubles, a triple, four walks and three stolen bases. He still has just a .636 OPS on the year.

Nick Lorusso also impressed, going 4-for-13 with a double, triple and a home run. Lorusso has otherwise been off to a really slow start to the year, owning a .678 OPS.

Thornton has been great after missing most of the 2025 season due to injury. He has a 2.76 ERA in his first three starts of the season.

Brendan Girton looked good on the mound, allowing a run over five innings. Girton allowed two hits and three walks while striking out five. He has a 4.02 ERA on the year.

High-A Brooklyn

The Brooklyn Cyclones had a rough week, dropping five of six games to the Hudson Valley Renegades. The Cyclones have had a brutal start to the season and are now sitting at 5-15 and in last place in the South Atlantic League North division.

Corey Collins had a breakout week, recording two home runs including one off of Gerrit Cole. He’s had a slower start to the year, owning a .663 OPS.

Those were Ross’ first two appearances for Brooklyn this year.

Cristofer Gomez was the standout arm out of the bullpen as he allowed no runs in three innings across two appearances. Gomez allowed two hits and three walks while striking out four. His ERA is now 1.04 through seven appearances.

Low-A St. Lucie

The St. Lucie Mets lost four of their six games to the Palm Beach Cardinals this past week. Pitching was an issue as the Mets allowed 52 runs in six games. St. Lucie is now 10-11 and in third place in the Florida State League East division.

Randy Guzman‘s fast start to the year continued as he went 7-for-19 this series with three doubles, a home run and four walks. Guzman has an .888 OPS through 20 games.

Biller, originally signed by the Mets as an undrafted free agent, owns an .893 OPS in 11 games.

Branny De Oleo had a great week as well, going 5-for-13 with a home run, a walk and two stolen bases. Unlike Guzman, De Oleo has mostly struggled this year and owns a .694 OPS.

Players of the Week

Offense – A.J. Ewing, 2B/OF Binghamton

A.J. Ewing broke out as one of the Mets’ top prospects in 2025 with a fantastic season, and he’s already outperforming himself this year. The 21-year-old has an OPS over 1.000 and has now earned a promotion to the final level of the minors before the major leagues. If he can continue to dominate in Syracuse, he may be a contributor in Flushing before long.

Pitching – Channing Austin, P Brooklyn

Channing Austin is enjoying a great start to the season in Brooklyn after a relatively underwhelming 2025 (4.38 ERA in 21 appearances) in St. Lucie. Austin, 24, is certainly older than most of the competition he’s facing, but it’s good to see him have success after not having much last year.

It may have not been the start the New York Mets wanted, but there still has been some good elsewhere in the organization. Below are some of the organization’s prospects who have gotten off to a strong start in 2026.

A.J. Ewing (Double-A)

A.J. Ewing is out to a phenomenal start for Double-A Binghamton. Entering the season Ewing was Metsmerized’s No. 4 prospect, and he is showing exactly why.

The 21-year-old currently has a slash line of .345/.466/.552 (1.017 OPS). Of his 20 hits, eight are extra-base with two being home runs. He has also already stolen 10 bases, getting caught only once. Ewing has walked (14) more than he has struck out (13). His wRC+ of 170 ranks 47th of 944 qualified hitters at any level in the minor leagues.

It is great to see the versatile (12 games in center field, four games at second base) former fourth-round pick carry over his spring training successes. Before being reassigned to minor league camp, Ewing went 8-for-21 (.381 batting average) with a 1.090 OPS in spring training with the big club.

Elian Pena. Photo by Ed Delany of Metsmerized

Elian Peña (Single-A)

Elian Peña was Metsmerized’s preseason No. 9 prospect, but based off what he has done so far, he will likely find himself near the top of that list soon. Peña, who received the largest international signing bonus handed out by the Mets ever, has been dominating Single-A baseball for St. Lucie.

Through 87 plate appearances, Peña is slashing .329/.448/.457 (.905 OPS). He has walked (15) more than he has struck out (13). Peña has also already stolen eight bases while being caught only once.

The only knock thus far this season on Peña has been the so-so power. Of his 23 hits, only seven are extra-base. At only 18-year-old, Peña will surely continue to put on more mass in return developing that power. Regardless, an extremely encouraging start for a prospect with sky-high expectations.

JT Benson (Single-A)

The 24-year-old JT Bensons certainly the least flashy name on this list but has began the season terrifically for Single-A St. Lucie. Benson played college ball at the University of Louisville followed by shorts stints in two independent leagues before being signed by the Mets’ organization.

Through his first 50 professional at-bats, Benson is slashing .320/.404/.580 (.984 OPS). Benson has been a bit swing happy, as unlike the first two on this list, as he has 11 strikeouts already to only three walks.

Benson is an extremely intriguing prospect. He dominated the Atlantic Coast Conference in his final two seasons at Louisville posting an OPS of .894 his junior season then .963 his senior year. Then, he had a massive full season for Evansville in the Frontier League in 2025, posting 10 homers, 40 RBIs, 24 stolen bases, and an .889 OPS.

The 15 games he has gotten with St. Lucie is a very small sample size, but his performance as the season prolongs is certainly worth watching.

John Bay (High-A)

John Bay joins Benson as the two who did not make Metsmerized’s preseason prospect rankings but are on this list. Bay is an undrafted free agent, like Benson, who is now one of the lone bright spots for a Brooklyn Cyclones team that is 4-14.

Through 54 at-bats, Bay is only hitting .241 but has a .842 OPS. He has already hit two homers to go along with three doubles and a triple. He is also a perfect four-for-four as far as stolen bases go.

Bay, a former college teammate of Nolan McLean, transferred out of Oklahoma State in 2022 and spent the remaining of his college career in the Atlantic Sun conference with Austin Peay. He posted a monster final season, slugging 22 homers with 66 RBIs and a 1.276 OPS earning himself a deal with the Mets’ organization as an undrafted free agent.

It was a rough showing for the Syracuse Mets (Triple-A), being blown out by the WooSox, while the St. Lucie Mets’ bats more than held their own against the Palm Beach Cardinals.

Both Double-A Binghamton and High-A Brooklyn were rained out and will play doubleheaders on Sunday.

The Syracuse bats’ were abysmal on Saturday afternoon, scoring just two runs and recording only four hits. On a day in which nothing went right for Syracuse, Bae’s double was the only extra-base hit.

The Mets were shut down by the WooSox staff, with five different pitchers combining for ten strikeouts and no earned runs allowed.

Several different arms took the mound for St. Lucie on Saturday night to varying levels of success. Joey Gerber began pitching for St. Lucie as a part of a rehab assignment from a finger blister issue that sidelined him fairly immediately after being called up to the major leagues.

Chirinos provided length for St. Lucie, striking out six over 4 2/3 incredible innings. RJ Gordon struggled immensely, not even making it out of the first inning. The bullpen imploded for the Mets in the final inning, with relievers Trey McLaughlin and Ryan Dollar allowing a combined four runs in the ninth inning to surrender a four-run lead.
