New York Mets right-handed pitcher Carlos Carrasco took the next step in his rehab, making an appearance with the Triple-A Syracuse Mets on Tuesday night in Trenton.

After a successful first outing, Carrasco’s second start didn’t quite go as planned. Heading into the night it was expected that the righty would throw three innings or about 50-60 pitches.

Instead, Carrasco lasted just 1.2 innings and allowed five runs on three hits while walking three and striking out one. All three of the hits he allowed were long-balls, and he threw just 41 pitches on the night.

Carrasco threw 27 pitches and allowed just one hit while striking out two over a pair of scoreless innings last Thursday in Coney Island with the High-A Brooklyn Cyclones. His fastball velocity was sitting around 94 MPH, and the breaking pitches looked sharp.

Earlier in the week, Mets manager Luis Rojas said if all goes as planned during his start with Syracuse, this could be Carrasco’s final step before potentially returning to the big league team back home at Citi Field this weekend or early next week.

With all the injuries, including spot starter Robert Stock going down with a hamstring injury in Tuesday night’s ballgame, the Mets could certainly use Carrasco back sooner rather than later.

Mets pitchers currently on the injured list include Carrasco, Jacob deGrom, David Peterson, Noah Syndergaard, Robert Gsellman, Tommy Hunter, Joey Lucchesi, Corey Oswalt, Sean Reid-Foley, Jordan Yamamoto, and Thomas Szapucki.

As we’ve seen over the past few days, this team needs some pitching help sooner rather than later. We’ll likely see what the Mets decide is the next step for Carrasco over the next few days.
