Carlos Carrasco‘s Met debut is going to have to wait, as the 33-year-old starter has been shut down for a few days due to elbow soreness.
Luis Rojas told the media on Wednesday that Carrasco was dealing with some body aches after receiving the second COVID vaccine, so the soreness could simply be another byproduct of that. There is not a lot of concern right now that this is a serious injury, as Carrasco has dealt with similar soreness in his elbow at this stage of camp throughout his career.
Last year when Carrasco was still with Cleveland, Indians manager Terry Francona said the following about his veteran starter.
“Every spring after his first outing, he gets mild elbow inflammation,” Francona said. “I would call it more maintenance than anything.”
For now the plan for Carrasco is to rest and recover over the next couple of days, then throw a side to see where his arm is at with the soreness before having him face live batters again. Rojas still expects to see Carrasco appear in a game soon.
Throughout his media availability, Rojas frequently mentioned the end of next week as their expected timetable for Carrasco’s return to game action. He also said that they will remain cautious with Carrasco and make sure that he is healthy for the long haul.
Rojas named Jordan Yamamoto, Jerad Eickhoff and Joey Lucchesi as other starters in camp who are getting stretched out that could fill if Carrasco were to miss time.
