Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports that the St.Louis Cardinals are still involved in the Eric Hosmer sweepstakes while the team considers a wide variety of options in the infield.

Hosmer hit .318/.385/.498 last season with 25 home runs and 94 RBIs. He also finished with 4.0 WAR and 135 wRC+. For his career, the one-time All-Star has hit .284/.342/.439 with a wRC+ of 111.

Hosmer has also won four Gold Glove Awards over the course of his career despite accumulating -21 defensive runs saved over the course of his career at first base, including -7 this past season.

Hosmer has been rumored for the majority of the off-season to be headed to the San Diego Padres, but this tweet reveals that might not be the case. The Boston Red Sox were also involved earlier in the off-season, but that changed after the team re-signed Mitch Moreland.

At the beginning of the off-season, Jon Heyman of the FanRag Sports Network ranked Hosmer as the number one free agent and projected the first baseman to receive a seven-year, $160 million contract.

Morosi also reveals that the Cardinals are still looking at the option of trading for Josh Donaldson, who will become a free agent after the 2018 season.

The Cardinals currently have Matt Carpenter set to man one of the corner spots of the infield. Carpenter’s versatility gives the Cardinals many options in terms acquisitions in the infield.

Morosi also speculates that Hosmer might not be the only Scott Boras client the team could have interest in. He cites Greg Holland and Mike Moustakas as potential fits as well, as the team has shown a clear willingness to spend this off-season.

The Cardinals have had one of the busier off-seasons to date as they have already acquired Marcell Ozuna, Miles Mikolas, and Luke Gregerson, while trading away Stephen Piscotty and Aledmys Diaz.
