Today the Baltimore Orioles declined the option on pitcher Kris Benson and normally I wouldn’t even consider the thought of having him back on the Mets, but then something dawned on me.

Maybe we should sign him as a number 5 pitcher and then after a few good starts we can trade him back to Baltimore, or anyone else for that matter, in exchange for one of their former first round picks.

Think about it, I mean it worked out so good when we got John Maine, why not try it again and see what happens. Okay, so I’m only dreaming, isn’t that what most Mets fans do anyway…

On a more serious note, it looks like Omar Minaya is moving fast on his own free agents as he now focuses his attention on re-signing second baseman Luis Castillo. Last week, Castillo had his right knee cleaned out and he is expected to be 100% by Spring Training. Castillo did a great job at second base after the Mets traded for him, and I am glad to see him coming back.

So far it seems like offensively, the 2008 Mets are not going to be that much different than the 2007 Mets, especially if we re-sign Paul Lo Duca. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. About the only real significant change we will see is more at-bats for Lastings Milledge in right field.

I never really thought the Mets had a problem scoring runs last season anyway. Hopefully, once Omar finishes up with Castillo and hopefully Lo Duca, he can begin to make the real changes this team needs in the bullpen and in the rotation.
