Asdrubal Cabrera left today’s game in the top of the eighth inning after getting hurt on a play in the inning prior.

Juan Soto was running to second and Anthony Swarzak fired the ball to second semi-erratically. Cabrera tried to catch it with his bare hand but it hit it wrong and ricocheted into the outfield. Trainers came out and he was wincing trying to make a fist. Ty Kelly replaced him at second base.

This isn’t the first time that the 32-year old has dealt with injury issues as Cabrera exited Tuesday’s game against the Phillies after aggravating the injury, but was back for Wednesday’s series finale. It appears the Mets may try to limit the switch hitter’s at-bats against left-handed pitching, as the injury presents more of an issue when Cabrera is hitting from the right side, according to Callaway.

Cabrera has been viewed as a trade piece for the Mets and his continued injury troubles only hurt matters for him.

Coming into today’s game, Cabrera was hitting .282/.334/.493 with 17 home runs and 52 RBI. Defensively, he has been well below average, compiling -16 DRS at second base this season.
