Cabrera Has Torn Ligament In His Thumb, May Hit DL

Asdrubal Cabrera was not in the lineup Sunday against the Brewers for the Mets’ excruciating 11-9 loss due to a sore left thumb, the one he injured last week diving for a ball. When asked if he would be placed on the disabled list, Cabrera said he would take it day by day.

“It depends on how long it stays like this,” Cabrera said. “We’ll see how I feel tomorrow.”

The Mets already have eight players on the DL (Jeurys Familia, Noah Syndergaard, Seth Lugo, Steven Matz, Travis d’Arnaud, David Wright, Yoenis Cespedes, and Brandon Nimmo). Losing Cabrera, yet another one of their core players, would obviously be devastating as the Mets are already four games into a losing streak. Terry Collins was asked if Cabrera would be available to play Monday in Arizona.

“The way he felt today, probably not tomorrow,” Collins said.

In 33 games this season, Cabrera has hit .257/.339/.381 with three home runs, 14 RBIs, and three stolen bases. If he were to miss time, Jose Reyes would likely man shortstop in his absence with Matt Reynolds and Wilmer Flores as other options.
