Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports that San Francisco Giants star Buster Posey has decided to opt out of the 2020 season.

Posey and his wife are adopting recently born identical twin girls. The twins were born prematurely, they are currently in the NICU and will be there for some time.

Posey joins 10 other big leaguers that have opted out of the 2020 season due to Covid-19 concerns; catcher Welington Castillo (Nats), UT Ian Desmond (Rockies), RHP Felix Hernandez (Braves), RHP Mike Leake (D-Backs), OF Nick Markakis (Braves), RHP Hector Noesi (Pirates), LHP David Price (Dodgers), RHP Joe Ross (Nats), RHP Tyson Ross (Giants), and 1B Ryan Zimmerman (Nats).

The 33-year-old catcher was the NL Rookie of the Year in 2010, the NL MVP in 2012, has won three World Championship rings, and is a six-time All-Star.

Posey now has one guaranteed season left on his contract and a team option for the 2022 season.
