As per Matt Ehalt of The Record, outfielder Bryce Brentz, who the New York Mets claimed off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday, has cleared waivers again, paving the way for the Mets to option him to Triple-A Las Vegas.
Brentz, 29, has spent the majority of his professional career in the Boston Red Sox organization before being acquired by the Pirates during the offseason. During his time in MiLB, he owns a slash line of .287/.311/.379 with 127 home runs and 462 RBI over eight minor-league seasons.
Brentz can refuse the assignment if he chooses to do so. If he doesn’t accept the assignment, he would, in turn, become a free-agent.
Now that Brentz has cleared waivers, whether he chooses to stay with the organization or not, it should mean that Phillip Evans keeps his Opening Day roster spot that was not in question up until the Brentz addition. Evans still needs to be added to the 40-man roster before tomorrow’s game.
