New York Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen spoke to the media from the GM Meetings in Arizona on Monday evening with regards to New York’s situation behind the plate heading into the 2020 season.

As per a video posted by Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News, Van Wagenen declared that the Mets, “have a starting catcher in Wilson Ramos“, adding, “We expect to go into the season with [Ramos] as our guy”.

Ramos, 32, signed a two-year, $19 million deal last winter to come to Queens after the Mets were spurned by Yasmani Grandal. The Venezuelan product slashed .288/.351/.418 with 14 homers, 73 RBIs, and a 105 wRC+.

Fine offensive production, no doubt. Unfortunately, Ramos’ sub-par receiving skills became a liability and eventually outshined his contributions at the plate, coming to a head with Noah Syndergaard‘s denied request for a personal catcher (read: not Ramos) late in the season.

Much has been said about the Mets’ last-in-the-NL defense last year (-93 DRS as a team) needing improvements, as well as Ramos’ defensive shortcomings (-13 DRS, -7.6 framing runs above average; both last in MLB among qualified backstops (FanGraphs) behind the dish, in particular.

Grandal’s name continues to surface as a potential upgrade option. Though, the Mets’ head of baseball operations doesn’t appear to see many options out there that are enticing enough to make a change.

“We feel like there are very few catchers who can be improvements on what we have,” Van Wagenen said. “We like who we have.”

Van Wagenen did allude to the Mets keeping their eyes open regarding improvements at the position.

“Right now, I think we are in the market looking for backup options. I think [Ramos] did a phenomenal job staying healthy and putting himself in a position to play a lot of games last year. We’d like to have some support behind that. [Tomas Nido] did an admirable job as a backup but we’ll continue to bolster that position.”

Nido, 25, is a superb defensive backstop (2 DRS, 5.9 FRM over 578.1 MLB innings), but his bat hasn’t developed at the rate his 2016 Florida State League (Advanced-A) batting title insinuated it may (.187/.222/.291 slash line over 244 MLB PA).

We’ll keep you posted with new information as it becomes available.
