ike davis

Okay, don’t kill me… More non-news news on the Ike Davis front… If you think you are weary of reading it, imagine what it’s like writing about it. 🙂

Anyway, Milwaukee Brewers GM Doug Melvin acknowledged he is continuing to discuss Ike Davis with the Mets, writes Adam Rubin. However Melvin bluntly stated there has not been agreement with Sandy Alderson on the price for the first baseman.

“First base, I’ve had ongoing discussions with Sandy Alderson, but we haven’t gotten to anything where we’re comfortable with the deal from our side, and he’s not been comfortable with the deal from his side,” Melvin told MLB.com.

Asked if the Mets were being too demanding, Melvin added:

“I don’t ever get into that. Everybody makes the deal that they feel is the best deal for them. I don’t ever consider whether asking prices are too high on [trades] or not, because you don’t know until after the deal and you’ve seen players perform. I think we’ve pretty well stood by — the one thing we’ve done — is we do not want to give up pitching.”

Yesterday, Adam Rubin also reported that Mets insiders now expect Ike Davis will be in spring training with the team while cautioning they are willing to reengage the Pittsburgh Pirates or Milwaukee Brewers or any other club in search of a first baseman in trade talks in the six weeks before pitchers and catchers report on Feb. 15.

As I mentioned yesterday and most of you already know, there’s still plenty of chances to move Davis even if he does open Spring Training with the Mets, as injuries could cause other teams to take a second look at Ike.

Worst case scenario is that the Mets could also just choose to cut him and just pay him his $600K rather than his entire salary. But I doubt that happens.

We now return you to our regular programming…
