According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the Texas Rangers have acquired Yovani Gallardo from the Milwaukee Brewers for a package of shortstop Luis Sardinas and two right-handed pitching prospects Corey Knebel and Marcos Diplan.
Gallardo, 28, was 8-11 last season with a 3.51 ERA and 1.29 WHIP. He’s a quality arm that’s made at least 30 starts the past six seasons while compiling a 89-64 record and a 3.69 ERA. He will make $13 million in the final year of his contract and is reportedly open to signing a long-term deal with the Rangers if everything goes well in 2015. The Brewers will pick up $4 million of Gallardo’s salary.
Sardinas, 21, batted .261/.303/.313 over 125 plate appearances and is regarded as one of baseball’s top infield prospects. Knebel, 23, and Diplan, 18, were ranked at the bottom of the Rangers’ top twenty prospects.
Joel Sherman of the New York Post believes that the trade could make open the door for the Brewers to sign James Shields.
