The Mets have completed their second-round interviews with GM candidates Sandy Alderson and Josh Byrnes.

Late this afternoon, Mets COO Jeff Wilpon issued the following statement:

“We will have no further comment on the process until we are ready to announce our new General Manager.”

Sandy Alderson is the clear favorite and according to Adam Rubin, an announcement will come on Friday.

Friday is an off day for the World Series.

Former Mets executive Gerry Hunsicker, believes the Mets would do well to go with Sandy Alderson.

“It’s absolutely critical you have the right people in place at the top. There’s got to be a clear game plan in place where everybody understands their role….Without that, nothing else matters.”

I read this interesting quote from Kevin Towers on Alderson in the NY Times in a solid article by Mike Sielski.

In 2006, Mr. Towers recalled, he was close to trading Scott Linebrink, the Padres’ setup man and a popular player on the club, even though the team was in first place. “It was a good baseball deal,” Mr. Towers said, but Mr. Alderson urged him to consider how the trade would be received among Mr. Linebrink’s teammates. Mr. Towers elected not to make the deal, and the Padres went on to win the National League West.

“He was all about making sure you think through everything before making the decision,” Mr. Towers said. “Sandy is a smart guy. He’ll have a network of people he’ll bring in who will make that organization better if he gets the job.”

Alderson used his vast experience to impart some knowledge to a younger Kevin Towers about the importance of team chemistry, and just because a deal looks good on paper, there are other things to consider before you make an in-season deal.

I like that kind of thinking.
