Matt Adams could be on the move as the Atlanta Braves are shopping the first baseman according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports. Heyman lists eight teams that could add a first baseman, with the Mets being one of them.

Adams, 29, was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 23rd round of the 2009 MLB Draft. He made his Major League debut in 2012 and was on the team for five-and-a-half seasons before being traded to the Braves on May 21.

The Braves received Adams and cash and gave up 19-year-old infielder Juan Yepez in the deal. The deal was ultimately a temporary one. Freddie Freeman is clearly the Braves’ first baseman and Adams was traded for to fill the void he left after breaking his left wrist and missing 44 games.

While the Braves moved Freeman to third base in 2017 for the first time in his career to accommodate the hot-hitting Adams at first, that lasted a mere 16 games. Freeman was moved back to first on August 1 and Adams was moved to left field after Matt Kemp was injured. Adams cooled off by that time anyway which justified the move.

With the Mets possibly in the market for a first baseman, Adams makes sense on a couple of levels. He is in his last year of arbitration which means the Mets wouldn’t have to commit much in terms of money and years. Adams made $2.8 million in 2017 and Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors predicts he will make $4.6 million in 2018.

He also played 129 1/3 innings in left field in 2017, which makes him fit the Mets’ need for a first baseman/outfielder. Of course 129 1/3 innings isn’t much and his -0.7 UZR and -5 defensive runs saved are nothing to write home about, but it could’ve been worse for his first time in the outfield.

However, if the Mets are interested it would obviously be wise to wait until after the non-tender deadline this Friday. Jeff Todd of MLB Trade Rumors notes that he could be non-tendered as he is currently the odd man out in Atlanta.

It’s not worth the Mets while to give up anything of value for Adams. If he’s non-tendered though, he would be an intriguing option.
