Our own Michael Mayer and minor league Tweeter Chase Ford have reported the Mets are calling up prospect Brandon Sproat to start on Sunday vs. the Reds.

Sproat’s overall numbers don’t jump off the page – he has a 4.24 ERA and 1.240 WHIP over 121 innings for Triple-A Syracuse. However, most of the damage against him came in his first nine starts of the season, through which he had a 6.69 ERA. Since then, he has a 3.19 ERA and 86 strikeouts over 84 2/3 innings.

Sproat has excelled at keeping the ball in the yard this year, allowing just nine home runs and posting a 53.2% ground-ball rate. He had his best start of the season in his last outing, allowing just three hits and two walks, striking out nine over seven shutout innings.

“It was good to see him throw the ball the way he did,” Carlos Mendoza said. “It’s one of those where it’s like ‘alright here I am too’, and we’re watching.”

Sproat seems likely to take Kodai Senga‘s spot in the rotation, who the Mets are considering sending down to Triple-A, pending his approval. Senga’s next start is slated for Sunday against the Reds, though the Mets have also considered having Nolan McLean start that day on regular rest.
