Brandon Nimmo played a phenomenal game on Wednesday at the plate and in the field. He was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a play in the outfield that will no doubt make SportsCenter highlights as he robbed Justin Turner of a game-tying home run in the top of the seventh.

Nimmo’s first hit came in the bottom of the third. It was a two-out single to left field that got the momentum started for the Mets. He scored on the next play of the game, a clutch two-run home run for Starling Marte to give the Mets a 2-0 lead over the Dodgers in the third.

Nimmo singled again to lead off the bottom of the fifth, but Marte grounded into a double play that got both him and Nimmo out.

The next play that involved Nimmo was a huge game-saving play in the top of the seventh. Turner crushed a ball to deep center field that off the bat appeared to be going out of the ballpark, but Nimmo had Jacob deGrom’s back. He read the ball perfectly, got ahead of it, and made a leaping grab over the fence to rob Turner of a game-tying home run. It was the game-saving play for the Mets who held on to defeat the Dodgers 2-1 at Citi Field. That was the second home run Nimmo has robbed in his career.

Nimmo spoke with the media immediately following the electric night at Citi Field that was concluded by the combination of  Timmy Trumpet and Edwin Díaz.

The first question that Nimmo was asked was if the catch in the seventh was the best catch he’s ever made? “Yeah, no doubt! It was amazing!” proclaimed Nimmo. “To be able to come up with a big catch for him (Jake), I was pretty pumped for that and finally get to give him something back that he always gives us.”

Wednesday night’s matchup between the Dodgers and Mets, two first-place National League teams was in front of a sold-out crowd. Nimmo expressed how fun it is to play in front of Mets fans at home at Citi Field.

“It’s fun to play in front of you guys. Keep coming out. Keep supporting us. This is a blast! This is playoff baseball right here! This is fun, huh!?” Nimmo said it’s a dream come true for him to play in front of the fans at Citi Field because the Mets’ organization is the only one he’s known as he’s been with them since he was drafted in 2011 in the first round.

Buck Showalter spoke on Nimmo’s catch speaking of how great of a play it was because of how challenging the catch was to make. “It takes a lot of knowledge of your field and how much time you’ve got.” Showalter said the ball had no hang time and that that fact made it that much better of a play for Nimmo as well.

Jacob DeGrom also spoke about Nimmo’s catch and how well he’s played in the outfield. “He’s done a great job and it’s been fun to watch. He continues to put the work in,” said deGrom.

Nimmo spoke with the media again later Wednesday night. He broke down the play in the seventh a little more in-depth saying he knew the ball was hit well and that his biggest concern was getting back to the fence as fast as he could.

“It was hit on a line, so I didn’t have a chance to look back at the wall. I just kind of had a feeling that I was near the wall and that I needed to go ahead and jump. The timing was right on it, and everything worked out just perfectly,” Nimmo said. “Big moment in the game,” Nimmo explained with a smile.

While it was a tremendous play, Nimmo said while he is trying to celebrate the play, he was also trying to calm down so he can “sleep at some point and get ready for a 4 p.n. game (tomorrow).”
