The New York Mets got a dose of welcome news from Syracuse on Wednesday evening as two of their presumed regulars heading into the season continue to progress through their respective rehab assignments.
Brandon Nimmo (bulging cervical disc) went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run while playing seven innings in center field on Wednesday, improving his rehab line to 8-for-28 over 32 plate appearances split between High-A St. Lucie and Triple-A Syracuse.
The Mets made a public point of Nimmo playing in two consecutive games before being dubbed ready to return to game action.
Now that the 27-year-old’s reached that threshold, one would assume his activation will follow in short order, with Mike Puma of the New York Post saying the team expects him back by the end of the week. Nimmo has been on the injured list since May 22.
In his first rehab action with Syracuse since May, Jed Lowrie (left side, right calf) went 1-for-3 with a run scored on Wednesday versus Lehigh Valley, playing five innings at second base.
Over four games with High-A St. Lucie (August 20 through August 26) before moving his rehabilitation efforts to upstate New York, the 35-year-old went 3-for-13 at the plate.
After signing a two-year, $20 million free-agent deal to come to Queens this offseason, the former Oakland and Houston standout is yet to make his Mets debut.
Lowrie’s return is likely a bit further off than Nimmo’s, but we’ll keep you posted as more information becomes available.
