With the game hanging in the balance, center fielder Brandon Nimmo delivered with his bat, helping the New York Mets defeat the Oakland Athletics 3-2 on Saturday. In the top of the seventh inning, the game was tied 2-2. Nimmo came up to plate with a runner on second and two outs, as he prepared to face former New York reliever Trevor May.

On the first pitch of the at bat, Nimmo took a 95 mph four-seam fastball and ripped it down the right field line, driving Tim Locastro in to give the Mets a 3-2 lead. The Athletics threatened in the final two innings of the game but the Mets were able to hold on, securing another series win.

Nimmo went 2-for-4 in the win, raising his average to .289 for the season. The 2011 first-round draft pick has been red hot over the last five games, slashing .421/.542/.579 with three extra base hits and five runs batted in. The walks were there for Nimmo to begin the season, but now he is really starting to get going at the plate.

As a whole, he is now slashing .289/.468/.378 which is good for a .846 OPS. This .468 on-base percentage ranks eighth in the major leagues and fourth in the National League. This is exactly why general manager Billy Eppler and the Mets decided to hand out an eight-year, $162-million extension to their leadoff man in the offseason.
