Our own Jacob Resnick was in Port St. Lucie on Friday reporting from Mets camp, when he noticed that NFL player Bradley Marquez was in uniform.
Marquez, 26, was the Mets 16th round pick in the 2011 draft from Odessa High School in Texas. He played in parts of two seasons with the Mets rookie level Kingsport Mets in 2012 and 2013. He hit .254/.293/.351 in 36 games while playing left field and center field. He was also playing football at Texas Tech during this time.
In 2014, Marquez announced he would forgo playing baseball to focus on his senior year of football at Texas Tech. The receiver/special teamer would sign with the St. Louis Rams after going undrafted.
The former state qualifier in long jump would spend parts of three seasons with the Rams before being waived on November 6, 2017. Marquez was signed to the Detroit Lions’ practice squad four days later and then promoted to the active roster on Nov. 27. In September of 2018, he was waived by the Lions and is currently a free agent.
The Mets now have two former NFL players in camp, Marquez and Tim Tebow.
