Matt Harvey‘s agent Scott Boras, who infuriated the Mets front office when he launched a public innings limit controversy that put the Mets and his client Harvey in an awkward and tenuous position, was at it again on Friday night.
Asked by reporters yet again about his opinion of how the Mets are handling Harvey, Boras said:
“Everybody knows what his ethic is. And remember this, too: Matt Harvey gave his arm already for the New York Mets.”
“In 2013, he pitched until he didn’t have a ligament. He’s the kind of guy, he wants his team to do well. He wants them to win. And you’ve seen what he’s done.”
Back in September, Boras first suggested that Harvey should not surpass his 180-inning limit, fearing it would be a risk to Harvey’s health and his potential earning power. Boras didn’t mention if it was Harvey’s call to keep pitching.
“You guys were there. I wasn’t,” Boras continued. “I’m not applying any interpretations to this because of the fact that it’s the playoffs, and I think the focus should really be on the game.”
Harvey did surpass his innings limit, by throwing 189 1/3 innings so far. He will start Game 3 of the NLDS on Monday at Citi Field and according to manager Terry Collins he will not be limited in any way. As long as he’s effective he will remain in the game and keep pitching.
